This Hollow Tree

You would think.
You would think that twenty years
Would be significant to in a life.
Or that the smiles gracing
Beautiful faces would show
Sincerity in its truest form –
Friendship and love.

You would hope.
You would hope that life
Would keep two connected,
Not drift the two apart.
And life’s harsh reality
Would strengthen a bond
Born in childhood – innocent and pure.

But you would be wrong.
Wrong about the loyalty,
Wrong about the kinship.
Even honesty is absent
From this hollow tree
Where we used to climb the branches high
And carve our names in the protective bark.
