Sweetest Summer

Her hair fell softly across his chest
As she rest her head on his shoulder.
Nothing between them but silence,
No noise as deafening and as somber.

Moments of silence all they could muster
As the time drained steadily away
From fingers ever interlocked,
From thoughts superbly intertwined.

Cherishing his touch she shed a tear –
A secret kept between her and the sun,
Setting all too suddenly in the field ahead,
A performance meant just for them.

Burying his nose in her auburn waves
Looking for one last memory to savor,
The smell of honeysuckle and heartache –
The final chapter to the sweetest summer.
