Love’s Contrast

Love for love’s sake – for love of love alone –
Leaves no true compassion for him, bleeding
From his heart so that your heart may beat
To a tune of romance and lofty expectations.
For love occurs when it lives quiet and still,
A background member of life’s chorus,
Or certainty will be the name attached
To heartache found cowering at the end
Of a trite whirlwind romance created rather
Than discovered once the dense fog lifts
Off the moors of desperation and desire.
Love of love shows beauty of humanity’s heart
But love of one, so stark in contrast of idealized
Passion, reveals a reality beautiful and dark –
Only welcoming those found in its truth.
